Markdown works as you type:
- **bold** or __bold__, *italics* or _italics_,
`code` and ~~strikethrough~~ format themselves once you close them
- # to ###### at the start of a line make headings
- - or * starts a bullet list, 1. a numbered one
- > quotes, ``` opens a code block, --- draws a rule
These are typing shortcuts, so they only apply in the visual editor — the one this button opened. Under "Edit source" you are writing wikitext, where bold is '''three quotes''' and Markdown characters stay as you typed them.
When you save, this article appears on the front page and in your journal, and anyone logged in can reply on its Discussion tab.
